MX Linux relies on the excellent upstream work by Linux and the open-source community, deploying Xfce4 as Desktop Environment on top of a Debian Stable base. We draw from the core antiX system and include work and ideas used by Warren Woodford for his MEPIS project. Ongoing backports and outside additions to our repos serve to keep components current with developments.

Things that are new in MX-23 "Libretto":

Highlights include:

    • Debian 12 “bookworm” base
    • New and updated applications.
    • Some highlights include:
      • Xfce 4.20
      • Improved privilege prompt management in many MX tools.
      • UEFI Manager, a standalone tool for managing UEFI settings.  Including a function for direct UEFI entry for frugal and regular installs
      • Fix to previous nvidia bug where nvidia drivers on kernels above 6.11 would require an xorg.conf to be generated before they could be used in X
      • Many many bug fixes.
    • All kernel updates: The standard Xfce, KDE, and fluxbox isos are all updated to the latest 6.1.133 kernel. AHS now uses the 6.14 liquorix kernel, with auto-updates enabled.

System requirements

For an MX Linux system installed on a hard drive, you would normally need the following components.

Minimum

  •  A CD/DVD drive (and BIOS capable of booting from that drive) or a 4-GB USB thumb drive (and BIOS capable of booting from USB)
  •  A modern i686 Intel or AMD processor
  •  1 GB of RAM
  •  6 GB free hard drive space

Recommended

  •  A CD/DVD drive (and BIOS capable of booting from that drive) or an 8-GB USB thumb drive, if persistence is used (and BIOS capable of booting from USB)
  •  A modern i686 Intel or AMD processor
  •  2 GB of RAM or more
  •  At least 20 GB of free hard drive space
  •  A 3D-capable video card for 3D desktop support
  •  A SoundBlaster, AC97 or HDA-compatible sound card
